{"id":20286,"date":"2021-11-12T12:20:13","date_gmt":"2021-11-12T11:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rimontgowineries.com\/blog\/?p=20286"},"modified":"2023-03-08T14:05:39","modified_gmt":"2023-03-08T13:05:39","slug":"portugal-in-very-general-terms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rimontgowineries.com\/blog\/portugal-in-very-general-terms\/","title":{"rendered":"Portugal in very general terms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Talking about Portuguese wines can be as wide as doing so about the Spanish ones. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimontgowineries.com\/wineries-for-sale-portugal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Portugal<\/a>\u00a0is a country that, although it hasn\u2019t a large extension, <strong>it has a great number of wine region throughout its surface, <\/strong>not only in the Peninsula but also in its islands. The country can be divided into four parts: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimontgowineries.com\/wineries-for-sale-portugal\/norte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">northern<\/a> area, from the Douro to Galicia; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimontgowineries.com\/wineries-for-sale-portugal\/centro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">central<\/a> area, between the Douro and the Tagus; the southern area, from the Tagus to the southernmost area; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimontgowineries.com\/wineries-for-sale-portugal\/las-islas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the islands<\/a>. Somehow, both rivers and the Atlantic Ocean represent geographic lines which delimit the wine regions of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The north which is the most mountainous area comprises the wine region of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimontgowineries.com\/wineries-for-sale-portugal\/doc-vinhos-verdes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vinho Verde<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimontgowineries.com\/wineries-for-sale-portugal\/doc-douro-y-port\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Douro Valley, Port<\/a>\u00a0and Dao; in the centre, between two large rivers, are located Bairrada, Bucelas, Alenquer and Colares; to the south, flat, warm and arid is found Madeira and the Azores islands. These are the main wine regions, but not the only ones.<\/p>\n<p>It is noteworthy the <strong>amount of autochthonous grape varieties<\/strong>\u00a0that exist in Portugal, almost three hundred. In fact, it is quite common the blend of some varieties in their wine production. For instance, among the white varieties, the Alvarihno, Loureiro, Muscat and Malvas\u00eda are a highlight. For the red varieties: Baga, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Jaen.<\/p>\n<p>Broadly speaking about the wine peculiarities of Portugal and focusing, more specifically, in the wines, the <strong>Port<\/strong> is one of the greatest fortified wines worldwide, whose history is significant and deserves its own post. The whites and reds from Dao and Bairrada developed by good wine makers, offer fantastic results. The sweet Muscats from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimontgowineries.com\/wineries-for-sale-portugal\/setubal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Setubal<\/a>\u00a0are classics well-known by its quality, whilst the fortified wines of Madeira, particularly, seduce me.<\/p>\n<p>Portugal offers an endless range of quality wines: whites, ros\u00e9s, reds, sweets, fortified\u2026.
