Infographic of the Region
The wineries in Extremadura are mostly framed in the unique Designation of Origin for wine in the region, the DO Ribera del Guadiana, which covers areas close to the river. It is one of the youngest areas in Spain, a centre of modern, high quality wines that have developed its own character. There is also an Extremadura Vinos de la Tierra. The region's wineries have invested heavily in technology, which has enabled them to develop their vineyards in an efficient way and offer great value for money. Extremadura is on the southwest of Spain, bordering Portugal and it is divided in the provinces of Cáceres and Badajoz.
The wineries of Extremadura cultivate native varieties such as Garnacha, Graciano, Malvar, Mazuelo, Mencía, Monastrell, Montua, Moscatel, Pardina, Parelleda, Pedro Ximénez, Perruno, Tempranillo, Verdejo and Viura, as well as international varieties, among which the presence of Cabernet Sauvignon stands out. This autonomous community competes with Andalusia as a producer of table olives.
