    Bolgheri / Maremma DOCs-DOCGs

Among the controlled designation of origin labels, Bolgheri DOC stands out as the flagship appellation of the region. Bolgheri is renowned for producing high-quality wines, mainly reds, crafted from a blend of international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, along with the native Sangiovese. This area has earned worldwide recognition for its ability to produce wines with exceptional depth, complexity, and elegance. Bolgheri Superiore DOC, a subcategory of this designation, is especially prized for its powerful wines with excellent aging potential. Another important DOC in the region is Val di Cornia DOC, which includes the hills of Livorno and the coastline, and produces high-quality red and white wines from both native and international grape varieties.

Rosso di Bolgheri DOC is a younger and more accessible wine from the same Bolgheri region, yet it still reflects the area's signature style and quality.

The Terre di Toscana IGT designation also applies to some wines produced in Livorno, including those from the Bolgheri area, representing a broader range of premium wines made from both native and international grapes. Bolgheri is especially recognized as the home of some of the world’s most famous IGT wines, with internationally acclaimed labels such as Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Guado al Tasso. Regarding DOCG wines, although Livorno does not have its own DOCG wines, Bolgheri DOC often enjoys the same level of prestige as a DOCG due to its outstanding quality and the reputation it has built in the wine world.

In Maremma, for white wine lovers, there are the areas of Ansonica dell'Argentario DOC, Vermentino di Capalbio DOC, Bianco di Pitigliano DOC, and Parrina DOC. Other red wine areas include Montecucco DOC, Monteregio DOC, Capalbio DOC, Morellino di Scansano DOC and DOCG, Sovana DOC, and Maremma Toscana DOC.

Morellino di Scansano DOCG is reserved for wines made with at least 85% Sangiovese grapes (locally called Morellino) in the area that includes the mountainous strip of Grosseto province between the Ombrone and Albegna rivers.

Montecucco DOCG Sangiovese is reserved for wines made with at least 90% Sangiovese grapes. The production area is located in the southern part of the Tuscany region, particularly in the eastern part of the Grosseto province. It covers a vast area that extends from the slopes of Mount Amiata to the last hills before the city of Grosseto, stretching north and northeast up to the borders with the province of Siena, partly delimited by the Ombrone River and its tributary, the Orcia.

Montecucco DOC is the DOC that precedes the above-mentioned DOCG. Its wines are produced in white and red varieties, as well as in the traditional Vin Santo and Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice styles.

The Suvereto DOCG designation is reserved for wines vinified from the following grape varieties, according to type:

    • Suvereto DOCG: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in varying proportions
    • Suvereto Sangiovese DOCG: minimum 85% Sangiovese
    • Suvereto Merlot DOCG: minimum 85% Merlot
    • Suvereto Cabernet Sauvignon DOCG: minimum 85% Cabernet Sauvignon

The production zone covers the entire territory of the municipality of Suvereto, in the province of Livorno.

Aleatico Passito dell’Elba DOCG is a sweet red wine. The area includes all municipalities on the island of Elba, which belongs to the province of Livorno. It was Napoleon's favorite wine during his exile on the island. The wine must be made from 100% Aleatico grapes. The grapes are dried on wooden racks for an average of two weeks. If the grapes come from classified vineyards, the label may include Vigna followed by the vineyard’s name.

Ansonica Costa dell’Argentario DOC refers exclusively to wines made from the Ansonica grape variety. The production zone is mountainous with southeastern exposure, benefiting from maritime breezes that provide excellent ventilation throughout the year and help create an airy and luminous environment ideal for viticulture.

Bianco di Pitigliano DOC includes the basic styles Bianco, Spumante, Superiore, and Vin Santo. The complementary white grape varieties used include mainly Greco, Grechetto, Sauvignon, Viognier, and Chardonnay, alongside Trebbiano Toscano.

Capalbio DOC includes wines from Sangiovese, Trebbiano Toscano, Vermentino, and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as other complementary grape varieties. Passito wines are made using the traditional “vinsanto” method, primarily with white grapes (at least 50% Trebbiano Toscano).

Maremma Toscana DOC includes wines made from grape varieties traditionally cultivated in the area—Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo Nero, Alicante, Trebbiano Toscano, Ansonica, Malvasia Bianca Lunga, and Vermentino—alongside international varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, and Viognier. Passito wines are made using the “vinsanto” technique, mostly with white grapes (Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia Bianca Lunga).

Monteregio DOC di Massa Marittima spans a vast, mostly mountainous area stretching from the border with the province of Livorno (northwest) down toward the Tyrrhenian coast between Follonica and Castiglione della Pescaia. To the north, it is bordered by the provinces of Pisa and Siena along the slopes of the Colline Metallifere.

Parrina DOC is limited to a small area in the hilly northeast of Orbetello and includes part of its municipal territory. Parrina DOC white wines are based on Chardonnay and other grapes such as Sauvignon. For reds, blends include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, which have been cultivated in the province of Grosseto for over twenty years.

Sovana DOC is located in a mountainous and pre-mountainous area comprising the municipalities of Pitigliano and Sorano, and part of Manciano. The grape varieties include native Sangiovese, Aleatico, and Ciliegiolo, along with international grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, plus other complementary varieties.

Grosseto DOC is another important designation in the province, producing wines from a wide variety of local and international grapes. Winemakers in the region experiment with different styles, crafting red, white, and rosé wines that reflect the area's warm climate and diverse terroir.

The two IGTs present in the province of Grosseto are IGT Costa Toscana and IGT Toscano or Toscana—the former shared with other coastal provinces, the latter with all other provinces in the Tuscany region.
