Castelo Branco

LOCATION AND SUBREGIONS

The provinces of Beira Baixa and Beira Alta are considered two important wine-making regions. They form part of the DOC Beira Interior. These areas elaborate high-quality wines with well-defined features.

In the Beira Baixa region, the main wine-growing areas are in the municipalities of Belmonte, Cova de Beira, Fundao and Castelo Branco, covering from the foothills of Serra da Estrela to the banks of the Tagus river to the south of Castelo Branco. The wide U-shaped Zêzere valley south of Guarda is the most promising area.

The Igreja de Sao Miguel and the Francisco Tavares Proença Museum located in the former bishop's palace with its famed baroque gardens combining fountains, lakes and waterfalls with its statues of the kings of Portugal on the stairs.

Also, the Praça de Camoes is the centre of the old town. The façades of the buildings have markings carved in the stone with medieval signs.
