Lleida

Lleida (in Spanish, Lérida) is a province situated in the extreme northeast of Catalonia. Having 231 towns, it borders France and Andorra as well as the rest of the Catalan provinces, Zaragoza and Huesca. It is a mountainous area where vine cultivation has been intermittent throughout history.

HISTORY OF WINE

Being an inland province, Lleida’s wineries have always produced very genuine wines, moving away from commercial influences. In fact, in 1780, the first château inBordeaux-style winery was created, Castell del Remei. Until the 19th century, there was 7,000 hectares of vineyards in Conca de Tremp, historic territory of Pallars (Jussà and Sobirà), where some towns honor wine (Sant Joan de Vinyafrescal or Cellers), but a good part disappeared because of the phylloxera.

During the 20th century, wineries moved to smoother areas of Catalonia. However, in 1914, Manuel Raventós acquired 3,200 hectares of land and ordered a concrete winery to be built, among other adjacent buildings which today make up the complex in the hands of the Codorníu group. They also bring decades of undergoing a new wine production impulse. La Conca de Tremp is one of the subzones which make up the Segre Designation of Origin.

WINES AND WINERIES

In Lleida the wineries of the Designation of Origin Costers del Segre dominates, but there is also production under the Designation of Origin Catalonia and Cava. The most outstanding wineries are Castell del Remei, Celler de Raimat, Vila Corona, Castell d´Encús, Sauvella, Mas García Muret, Terrer Pallars, El Vinyer de Tremp, Miquel Roca, Xic´s Cal Borrech, Mas Blanc I Jové, Celler del Castell de Monsonís, Bodegas Boldú, Celler Mas Ramoneda, Clos Pons, Costers del Sió, Bodegas la Gravera, Bodegas Tomás Cusiné or Bodegas l´Olivera.

POINTS OF INTEREST

A big tourist attraction in Lleida is the Romanesque set of Vall de Boi, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, which concentrates a large number of churches and buildings of great architectural value. It is about a northern province with mountainous landscapes which invites snow sports and more than ten ski resorts. As well as Arán Valley, which enjoys a certain independence as an area with its own language, it is also worth mentioning the Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. Like the rest of Catalonia, Lleida also boasts highly valued gastronomy.
