Soria

Soria is found in the east of Castile and León, the least populated province in Spain. Its population density is 8.63 /km², and of its 183 towns, half of them do not exceed one hundred people. Most of the province corresponds to the headwater basin of the Douro, along which different regions are scattered.

HISTORY OF WINE

The excavation of wineries in the Ribera of the Douro river give a good account of the age of viticulture in Soria, like in the rest of the territories of Castilla La Mancha. The areas with the greatest tradition in Segovia are Alcarria, Aranda and San Esteban de Gormaz. It is true that the phylloxera and the depopulation caused a setback in activity in the past, but in recent times it has experienced a renewed boost and new investors are arriving to the area. From Morales to Langa de Duero, it is common to find small family wineries with good quality wines.

WINES AND WINERIES

As one can imagine by its situation, the Designation of Origin which predominates in Soria is Ribera del Duero. The most highlighted wineries are Bodegas Domino de Atauta, Bodegas Gormaz, Bodegas Medinaceli and Bodegas Valdeviñas.

POINTS OF INTEREST

The province of Soria is highlighted for its rich roman heritage with monuments like Concatedral or the Monasterio de San Juan de Duero in the capital, but also the Iglesia de San Miguel in San Esteban de Gormaz and the Catedral deSanta María del Burgo de Osma. With respect to natural spaces, those of most interest are Sierra de Urbion and Laguna Negra, as well as the Cañón del Río Lobos National Park. Soria forms part of the Ruta del Cid and has a strong gastronomy, like the other territories of Castilla y Leon, where meat plays a huge role and goes down well with the great wines of the area.
