Baigorri buys Bodega Granbazán

Wineries that buy wineries: Baigorri becomes the owner of Granbazán

Historic wineries with the technology for the production of Premium wine, 15 hectares of its own vineyard, as well as the control another 45. It also has the capacity to produce 800.000 litres, store another 500.000 litres, as well as a barrel room for the storage of another 3.000 barrels. The Granbazán project is a real gem, and the market has wasted no time in advertising it. The Alavesa company Baigorri wineries, located in Samaniego, has acquired the Galician winegrowing company, situated in Vilanova de Arousa for an unknown amount. An operation that reveals the importance of making strategic movements in the world of wine, in this case, focusing on wine tourism, as this way they gain the perfect spot on the Island of Arousa and the route of the Camino de Santiago.

Until now Granbazán belonged to Manuel Otero Candeira and annually commercialised up to 500.000 bottles with designation of origin D.O. Rías Baixas. Based on the latest available data, its head office Agro de Bazán turned over more than 1.5 million euros in 2015, which resulted in a 12% increase with respect to 2014. Regarding Baigorri wineries,  which has not yet clarified if they will take over the entire company or if it will operate for free, commercialises yearly about 450.000 bottles of wine with appellation of origin D.O. La Rioja and reach  3.5 million euros in 2016, a 18% more  than the previous year. This property is owned by Pedro Martinez Hernández, who acquired it in 2007 and who has been the real promoter of the business.

Baigorri is a recently built winery,  by the Guipuzcoan architect Iñaki Aspiazu Iza in 2002. The building is influenced by a gravity-led reception system for the grapes or, in other words, that the winery reduces the maximum usage of mechanical elements by using the law of gravity to maneuver grapes and wine. This involves various levels and heights that give a beautiful and immense see-through glass-box sensation. Its touristic desire is shown in the great panoramic viewpoint, the promotion of touristic routes around the village surroundings of Samaniego and beneath the Sierra de Cantabria, the tasting room classes, the gastronomic offering in the restaurant and the introduction of a Barrica Club.

All of which allows us to understand their interest of the historical Granbazán stamp, a building with a strong influence of the French chateau, that is covered with blue tiles. It is, in turn, the first oenologist project Argo de Bazán, founded in the year 1980, and that has been successful in becoming the plantation and work centre of Albariño grapes. It should be mentioned that this company also has a production line in the Valencian Community, where it owns Más de Bazán, that produces cava and rosé wine with the bobal variety of grape.
